La Jolla Tribe Opens Smoke-Free Trading Post Casino

The La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians have opened a 100% smoke-free casino on Hwy 76 in Pauma Valley of San Diego County. This mini-casino offers 76 Class II slot machines along with the La Jolla trading post fuel station, deli and convenience store.

Tribe members and visitors celebrated the new casino opening with a ribbon cutting by Tribal Chairman Fred Nelson Jr.

The Trading Post Casino is located at the entrance to the La Jolla Indian Campground which offers camping, hiking and tubing down the San Luis Rey River. There is also the 2.5 mile long La Jolla Zip Zoom Zipline.

California's Clean Air Project was pleased to present the tribe with the California Clean Air Award for making their casino 100% smoke free.

The La Jolla Trading Post & Casino is scheduled to open by the end of this month, as the original trading post and gas station will be operating 75 slot machines.

The Trading Post & Casino is located along Highway 76 in Pauma, California. It is owned by the Band of Luiseno Indians, which has nearly 700 members. The reservation covers 10,000 acres.

Over a decade ago the tribe started with 20 slot machines. It was known as the smallest casino in the state.

The new casino space will be 2,500 square feet. It will take over half of the building. The other half will be a deli and a store that will sell camping necessities and groceries.

The tribe wanted to add more slot machines as a way to make a better economic outcome for their members. They are actively working on ways to build industry. Adding the slot machines is a small part of the bigger plan.

The gas station is known to have the lowest prices in the area.

Other business operations owned by the tribe include an RV Park and campground. There are 36 hook ups for the RVs. They also own the La Jolla Zip Zoom zipline.

Having enough stability for the businesses to support each other is one of the tribe's goals. A reward program for the casino is one way to make that happen. Visitors to the casino can earn points that can be redeemed for gas station, zipline, an RV park discounts.

By September the new reward program is expected to be in place.

Money earned from the casino and gas station will go to fund police and fire services. As well as youth programs for the tribe.
